What is meditation?

At its core, meditation is training in awareness.

The meaning of the word meditation comes from the same root as “medication”. Medication is used to heal the body. Meditation is used to heal the mind.

Meditation is a skill

Learning to meditate is like developing any other skill. It takes daily practice, for a long time, to see the results of your investment.

Why meditate?

Your primary directive in life is to raise your consciousness. Meditation is the single most important tool for raising your consciousness, and for personal transformation.

Your entire life emanates from the mind. The quality of your emotional, physical, and spiritual life reflects the quality of your mind. Meditation is the key to attaining mental mastery.

 You can either insist that the streets be free of dirt, or you can wear shoes. We’re somehow consistently shocked that issues arise in life. We are constantly reacting to people and events as if we are surprised that things will not always go our way. Meditating is like putting on a pair of shoes; you inoculate yourself against the inevitable ups and downs of life, and you gain emotional mastery.

If you want to understand your mind, sit down and observe it. Then and only then, will you inch closer to living the principles that you preach.

How to meditate

            Meditation is deceptively simple. But what is simple is not always easy.

  • Commit to establishing a daily meditation practice of 10-20 minutes for the rest of your life.
  • Choose a type of meditation to try.  (Some types: mindfulness (breathing) meditation, mantra meditation, body scanning meditation)
  • Sit down in a comfortable position, and practice your selected method.

Remember: your mind’s favorite technique to avoid meditation will be to overcomplicate it!  

It’s a lifelong journey. It takes 1 year of daily meditation to get tangible results.
